2004 Ford Focus put key into ignition and it won't turn

2004 Ford Focus

QUESTION:

'04 Focus with 28,000 miles. Problem: put key into ignition and it won't turn, steering wheel NOT locked. called local Ford dealer, said recurring problem on Focus, needs new ignition. Too expensive for me, so Ford dealer mechanic said to 'hit' the key into the ignition. It worked but now have to carry rubber mallet in car to hit key to turn ignition to start car. What's going on? Is this a recall issue? Why should a 4 1/2 yr old car with LOW mileage have this problem? I am not happy with this Focus. There have been other problems that were partially resolved. I still get very poor gas mileage but that's another problem for another time. What about this ignition problem?

Answer:

Yes this was a common problem and they did redesign the new cylinder to prevent this from going bad again. And no Ford never did issue a recall on this problem. So yes unfortunately you will have to replace the lock cylinder to prevent carrying a hammer around. And the hammer trick will not last forever. So yes I see why you are upset about the car but no company ever issues recalls every time they have a common problem they all have them. I wish you luck Steve
PS there are programs that dealers are provided with the option of helping the customer out one time after the warranty has ran out. If you have a good relationship with the dealer and if you are NICE then they may help you. But they do not HAVE to.

1996 Chrysler Sebring the key is stuck in the ignition

Question:

I only had 1 key to my 1996 Chrysler sebring, so about a month ago I went to a local locksmith and they made me a copy of the original key. I am not for sure, but I am guessing that my original key has a chip in it because it is a factory or dealership key w/ black top. My sebring is equipped with the anti-theft system, of which when I purchased the car used, I did not receive the key-less remote to. Anyways, my question or problem is this: I have been using the copy key for the entire month with no problems until a week ago...the key is stuck in the ignition on acc. and will NOT turn all the way to lock so I can get it out! It is STUCK and WILL NOT COME OUT!!!! What could be causing this and how do I get it out? Is it because it isn't the chip key and if so how could I use it before now without any issues? HELP!!!!

ANSWER:

Any Chrysler's keys with a black top do not have a chip, they are usual blank keys.
Keys with a chip ( transponder) have a gray top, like this one:

Your anti-theft system contains the switches that are located inside the front doors and when you turn your door lock cylinder ( driver or passenger) a switch send an ON or OFF signal to the Body controller.
Your problem with the stuck key is only mechanical failure of the ignition lock cylinder.
There is nothing related to a "chip" technology.
You should replace the ignition lock cylinder.

Advice on Questions to Ask When Buying A Car

2009 Smart fortwo
When Purchasing a New Vehicle there are a few things you may wish to do before walking into the car dealer. Know the questions to ask when buying a car. Be sure you are prepared with all the information you can get. Spend time deciding what it is you want and stick to it. There are a few tips listed below to help you prepare for your next vehicle purchase.

The best advice I can give you is to take your time when looking for a car, and don't make any rash, emotional car buying decisions.
Every car salesman you come into contact with will have only one thing on his or her mind; to get you to buy a car "today!" These people work under the assumption that you will never come back, so they have to close the deal while you're in there the first time.
Don't give into the pressure. Take your time and sleep on it . . . for several nights! You'll be amazed at how different your perspective will be on a car deal after a couple of days.
Don't let the car salesperson talk you into giving them any .... read more

theft system has locked my car down can't start it. took battery

theft system has locked my car down can't start it. took battery cables of for a few minutes, but did not help. 97 Cadillac Deville. let sit four hours, took positive cable off battery for a while, now my battery is dead used another car and booster cables for battery no luck

Answer:

There is a problem with the "passkey ll " system. The best way to diagnose that would be the "interrogator" tool. Most lock smiths will have that. There are 13 different resistance values in the diodes, (in the key) and most times it is a problem with the ignition switch sending the correct information to the decoder module.

The best thing to do would be to get a lock smith to come and check it. They will normally charge about $65, which is less than the dealer, minus the tow charge. They will pinpoint what part is needed.

Question:
How to change rear brake pads on a 2001 Mazda Miata. I can't get the caliper to fully retract so I can put on the new pads.

I have a 89 ford escort that has been setting for 10 years.

Question:
I have a 89 ford escort that has been setting for 10 years. want to get it going again but am having brake problems. Replaced brake booster. both rear wheel cylinders and shoes, both front calipers, master cylinder and cleaned the lines and I still don't have good brakes. I have to stand hard on the brake pedal to stop but it will not stop as fast as it should. Could it be the brake pressure control valves locates on the bottom of the master cylinder or is it something else. It just doesn't stop like it should in case of need to.

Answer:
Below is are quick diagnostic steps for hard brake pedal. You have done most everything but we need to take it a step further. Either the new booster is bad(it happens) or you do not have sufficient vacuum at the booster most likely caused by an engine vacuum leak. Since the car has been setting for some time it is more than possible for there to be cracked hoses, etc that are creating a vacuum leak. A higher idle than normal is a classic description of a vacuum leak.

Brake pedal feel is firm, but brakes lack sufficient stopping power or fade
1) Check the operation of the brake booster and brake booster check valve. Replace worn or failed parts.
2) Check brake linings and brake surface areas for glazing and replace worn or damaged parts.
3) Check for seized hydraulic parts and linkages, and clean or replace as needed.

passenger side window just froze and wont go back up or go down

Question:

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado. Last night my passenger side window just froze and wont go back up or go down either. I was thinking its a fuse or something like that, but when I do press the button for the window to move, all it does is click on that side. Drivers side window is fine. Would you be able to help me out?

Answer:

Since the other window works , it is not a fuse as they are not separate. Most likely your regulator has failed you and will need to be replaced. The window motor and regulator are sold as an assembly to be replaced at the same time.

My girlfriend has a 2000 jaguar XJ. She had one burned out low beam

Question:

My girlfriend has a 2000 jaguar XJ. She had one burned out low beam, and when the mechanic replaced this one bulb, both low beams barely threw any light. She drove a few days with the high beams on to compensate, but now they aren't working. Could the mechanic have screwed things up? Installed the light wrong? etc. He claims she now needs a new part which will be hundreds of dollars...all for a burned out headlight. The rest of the lights were fine until he replaced the one bulb. The other low beam was plenty bright. In fact, it was brighter by itself than the two low beams combined after he replaced the one bulb. I wondered if it could have been a ground issue or something to that effect.

Answer:

If all the mechanic did was replace the headlight that went out for some reason and the lights did not work correctly afterwards, then i would say the part was probably bad to begin with or the replacing the bulb would have fixed it the first time.

It is possible, You should have had him remove the bulb after noticing that it did not fix it right but you probably would ave found it needed the same part as what the mechanic is telling you that you need now.

wrangler is overheating and has an entire new cooling system.

Question:

wrangler Jeep 4.0, my 94 wrangler is overheating and has an entire new cooling system. it now is idling rough and stalls out. whats wrong? replaced the entire cooling system. was fine for a month now it overheats again and idles rough and dies

Answer;

This is a classic sign of a blown head gasket. To confirm this, have a compression test done. All cylinders should be within 20 psi of each other. If not, you have a blown head gasket. Have the head check for cracks once removed to be on the safe side.

4 New tires, front ball joints, frt rotors and pads, rear brake rotors and pads

I have a 2004 Ford Mustang. Just had the following work done: 4 New tires, front ball joints, frt rotors and pads, rear brake rotors and pads; $2200. Was this a fair price?

Answer:
Depending on what kind of tires and size. The front pads and rotors and rear pads and rotors at "brake shops" run around $1200.00 usually less at a local car repair shop and could be more at a dealer. Ball joints could run around $450.00 installed. and tires can run from $100-$250 each depending on what you got. So if the tires where good ones then you got a fair price.

REPLACED MY BATTERY ON MY 2004 F150, NOW I GET SERVICE ENGINE SOON

Question:
I JUST REPLACED MY BATTERY ON MY 2004 F150,4.6 LITER NOW MY TRUCK IDLES REALLY LOW,I HAVE DRIVEN THE TRUCK ABOUT 60 MILES SINCE I CHANGE BATTERIES NOW I GET SERVICE ENGINE SOON DISPLAY TODAY THE LIGHT JUST CAME ON BUT THE LOW IDLE WAS FROM THE BEGINNIG OF THE BATTERY CHANGE

Answer:
IN ORDER FOR THE LIGHT TO COME ON AND SET A CODE, THE ISSUE HAS TO THERE FOR A CERTAIN LEGTH OF TIME. FOR EXAMPLE A MISFIRE MAY OCCUR BUT UNTILL IT OCCURS 100 TIMES DURING 400 CYCLES IT WILL NOT SET A CODE.

The first thing to do would be to extract the check engine light codes. This can be done with a Scan Tool or you can take it to an Autozone and they will do it for free. Once you have the code it will help guide to the problem area.

Already Tried: Spark plugs and wires. air filter. my gas mileage has slowly dropped with this problem

the a/c blower on my 2005 lincoln town car at times seems like it can't tell how hard it should be blowing

Question:
the a/c blower on my 2005 Lincoln town car at times seems like it can't tell how hard it should be blowing. ( sounds like it is out of breath..like a bellows. ) a dealer replaced the blower motor and blender door motor. problem still exists. please help. my warranty expires in 3-4 weeks. Already Tried: one dealer said they replaced the blender door motor as well as main blower motor. there were issues with direction of air flow as well as noisy blender door. these two things seem OK now but at times, especially when starting the car in a situation where the auto a/c should come on, it does come on but the blower huffs and puffs like it sounds and feels like it is out of breath.please respond

Answer;
I have only one suggestion. Check the cabin air filter. If it is clogged there will not be sufficient air flow for the blower. Check that and if that's it you can hit accept, otherwise I don't have anything else for you.

I am always steering to the left when driving on most roads

Question:
I own a chev uplander I am always steering to the left when driving on most roads except where the road are flat (no crown ) I Do not remember it being this way when it was new . Any Ideas

Answer:
Sounds very much like somehow the front end alignment got knocked out of adjustment. Either because of a loose steering component or maybe a curb got bumped during a parking maneuver or a pot hole in the road caught it wrong. Your best bet would be to have the front steering components checked for looseness and have the front end alignment checked and reset as needed. When they pull like that it is normally because of those reasons and those same reasons can end up causing excessive tire wear also . There an be one other cause and that is if a belt in the tire is separating. Rotate the front tires to the back and see if it goes away, if it does i recommend replacing the tires.

Honda civic that when it is cold it shifts slow into high gear

2002 Honda Civic

Question:
I have a 2002 Honda civic that when it is cold it shifts slow into high gear. the rest of the gears are OK, and it shifts fine when it gets warmed up. Already Tried: Changed the fluid

Answer:
Now you are referring to your car having an automatic transmission? If that is the case, I would recommend letting you car warm up a little before driving it. What most likely is happening, is when driving the car cold, not all the fluid has a chance to move around enough & warm to proper operating temperature. If it is only the top gear, you may not have enough fluid pressure &/or the torque converter is not engaging yet like if the car was at normal operating temperature. If you feel you have a much larger problem you can contact your local Honda dealer &/or Honda to verify that your transmission is not under a recall. That would help also.

Questions to Ask the Seller

  1. Why are you selling the vehicle?
  2. How many miles are on the odometer?
  3. What's the condition of the vehicle?
  4. Does it have any special features?
  5. Are you the original owner?
  6. Was the vehicle ever involved in an accident?
  7. Do you have service records for it?
  8. How much are you asking for it?
  9. Take along the Used-Car-Buyer's Checklist.

Note that most of these questions are legitimate for used-car dealers as well. The more documentation they have on the car, the better. You can ask for a phone number of the previous owner if the dealer doesn't have many details. How the dealer reacts to this request may be of interest to you. More

2004 BMW X5 and the sat nav is showing an error

Question:

I have a 2004 BMW X5 and the sat nav is showing an error. Have cleaned the laser, cleaned the disc, tried the DVD unit in another BMW and it works fine! But I still have an error message pop up when I try and access the sat nav.

Answer:

Try performing a battery disconnect. You have to remove the spare tire and the cover over the battery. Wait at least 5 minutes after the key is shut off before disconnecting battery negative. Once you have disconnected the battery leave it disconnected for about ten minutes. This will re-set all of the modules. Once you have re-connected and started the vehicle turn the steering wheel lock to lock and the abs lights will go out. Now check the function of your Nav system.

Get the best deal buying a car in a fallin market!

Since automotive sales are tanking, now's the time to put off that new car purchase, right? Wrong. While it may seem silly to part with your hard-earned money right now, economic doldrums mean that now is one of the best times in years to get an incredible deal on a new car. The deals won't just happen by themselves, though.

1) Show the dealer you're a strong, serious buyer who can either afford to pay cash for the car or will qualify for financing.

2) While sales are down overall, some individual models, and even some brands, are still going strong. To get the best deal, you have to target your shopping. Look for good cars that aren't selling well.

3) Remember that no matter what incentives are available, you still may be able to negotiate for more. Play your cards right and you may turn a $2,000 incentive into $4,000.

4) While paying 0 percent financing on a car loan may not be as exciting as getting $3,000 cash back, over the long term, the lower financing rate may save you more money.

5) Remember that you can always negotiate the price of your trade. It's always a good idea to bring in an online estimate of your car's value. Full Article

What does McCain and Sarah Palin Drive?

They may not agree on how to handle Pakistan or what the "Bush Doctrine" means, but Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin both think Volkswagen's are cool. The senior senator from Arizona counts a 2005 VW convertible among his 13 cars, and his running mate from the great state of Alaska drives a fire-engine-red Jetta diesel when she isn't chasing down moose on a snowmobile or carrying hockey teams or tanning beds in her state-issued Suburban.

Word that McCain drives a furrin car brought a quick response from the Obama campaign, which wanted to know just what country McCain is putting first. But the Obamaniacs missed the point. The only convertible VW imported to the states in 2005 was the Beetle. That's right -- tough-as-nails John McCain drives the biggest chick car on the planet. Full Story

how do I remove drivers side window on 1999 Saturn SC2?

Question:
I have removed both the interior and exterior door panels on the driver's side. I can't seem to figure out how to remove the two clips that hold the bottom of the drivers window in place on the roll-up mechanism. My windows are the manual roll-up type, not powered.

Answer:
You are almost there. all you have to do now is push the window glass back towards the car( also with the window about half way up so the 2 white tabs that hold the window to regulator is visible) then the tab that is closer to the back of the car push down on the tab. you will see there is a tab with a lock on it just push down on the tab and push the window glass back this will make the front tab butt up against the window glass. do the same thing to the front tab now. push down on the tab and then push the glass back and up now. the glass comes out in between the inner and outer door panels.

hatch release suddenly popped and went weak, now the trunk will not open

Question:
My 2001 Explorer XLT back hatch release suddenly popped and went weak, now the trunk will not open. What can I do to open the trunk and fix the broken handle? Already Tried: key doesn't work, the squeeze latch stopped working today and has no tension on it to pull the door mechanism open.

Answer:
Basically the only option that you may have is to try to remove the interior trim piece from inside the truck and then turn the latch with your hand to open the hatch. Most of the time it is not very easy to remove the whole trim piece but I think on the Explorer you can pop the back glass and get in through the top of the trim piece once you pull it over the window latch. This is the way you are going to get to the inside to manipulate the latch in order to open and fix the handle.

I was driving and all of a sudden the car started to shake violently.

QUESTION:
1997 Nissan, I was driving and all of a sudden the car started to shake violently. The car started to reduce speed to about 20mph even though my foot was on the accelerator the car would not go over 2000 rpm's and would not go over 20mph. I have visually inspected the timing belt and there seems to be no rip or tears on it. I tried to add oil just in case the car was running low on oil.

ANSWER:
If your car has a timing belt, it is enclosed within the timing covers and you would not be able to see it. Most Nissan's have timing chains, so I don't think you saw the belt. Being said, I don't think you have a timing issue. I think you have a misfire on one or more cylinders giving this reduced power and violent shaking. If a check engine light has come on, you have to find out what codes are in memory. That is the first step. That will lead us to the offending cylinder if this is due to a misfire. Once we find the bad cylinder, we have to confirm, spark, fuel and fuel injector pulse, along with compression. One of these things is missing causing the misfire.

Can Cars today really run on Vegetable Oil?

Vegetable Oil vs. Diesel Fuel
Diesel engines are a type of internal combustion engine. Rudolf Diesel designed his own engine and obtained patent for his design. In his engine, fuel was injected at the end of compression and the fuel was ignited by the high temperature resulting from compression. Rudolf Diesel originally designed the diesel engine to use vegetable oils as a fuel in order to help support agrarian society and to enable independent craftsmen and artisans to compete with large industry. This was also after his failed attempt to run the engine on coal dust. Diesel engines are used in cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and locomotives. Read Entire Article...

AC appears to work when driving, although inside car temp feels

Question:
AC appears to work when driving, although inside car temp feels like its on the increase. When stopped temperture guage increases from mid point to near full deflection, continued driving drives the temp sensor back towards mid point, although not much cooling going on. Clutch like sound from compressor kicking on and off, when observed flywheel appears to start and stop, large AC fan (top of cooling housing) does not kick in at any point, although it sounds like there is a demand for it. Complete cooling housing replaced appx 12-18 months ago...car odometer only 50000km operating in Saudi Arabia, extreem ambient temperature...any suggestions

Answer:
The compressor clicking on and off is a sure cut sign of the system being low on freon. Once the freon level is full then the system will work properly.

can u tell me what i need to do to loosen the bolt that holds on an idler pully

IDLER PULLEY

QUESTION:

Can you tell me what I need to do to loosen the bolt that holds on an idler pulley on a 95 Buick Lesabre, I haven't really tried anything

ANSWER:

All you need to do is find a socket that fits it, should be 13mm or 15mm. then using a ratchet turn it counter clockwise. Remove the bolt and idler together. It may be easier to remove the serpentine belt before doing this. This can be done by inserting a 3/8" ratchet in the end of the tensioner and loosing the tensioner to allow the belt to be removed. Draw a picture of the belt routing for reference when installing.

Mercury Mountaineer has plenty of battery power, but will not turn over

QUESTION:

My 1999 Mercury Mountaineer has plenty of battery power, but will not turn over - any ideas? Attempted to jump start battery - but that was not the issue. The battery is fine. It simply won't turn over, I can hear a metallic click, but the starter does not engage.

ANSWER:

If you idea of plenty of battery power is the fact that the lights and radio work then it can still be the battery. The starter requires around 250 amps where the radio only requires around 5 amps. 99% of all no starts are caused by a failed battery. You can have the battery load tested or use a battery out of another vehicle to test.

Once you have ruled out the battery, the next step is to test for power at the "s" terminal (small wire) at the starter while someone holds the key in the "Start" position. If you see battery power , then you need to replace the starter.

Should I buy a New Car or should I wait?

This is my opinion, Don't but a new car... instead lease it for either 2 or 3 years. The reason I say this is that I believe the car manufactures will come out with MPG around 50 or better, with this you would have a hard time getting rid of a car you buy today. If you lease it you turn it in and go for a different one. The government is calling for better fuel mileage not matter if we want it or not.

Ford already has a car they manufacture over seas that gets 65 mpg. It is a diesel and Ford has decided that they could not make money on this car in the US as of today, but none the less the technology is already here.

last night the "check engine" light came on

QUESTION:

I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX and just recently had a yearly maintenance in July 2008. Just last night the "check engine" light came on. What can be the problem with my Honda? What signs can I look for? Where do I start for troubleshooting since I don't have the manual?

ANSWER:

An error has been detected by the engine management system and you need a computer scan done to find out what is causing the check engine light illuminate.

You can get it done for free at your local Autozone or you can purchase a scan tool and do it yourself.

heat and air does not come on anymore.

QUESTION:

I have a 2005 F250 Harley Davidson edition and the heat and air does not come on anymore. It has the auto control system in it. It started out with the air blower not being able to be controlled or shut off then it went to just nothing? Where should I start to look? So far just reset the battery to see if it rests the computer

ANSWER:

Assuming you have checked all the fuses.
The first place I would look would be the blower motor relay ( located in the battery junction box under the hood, for specific location refer to fuses and relay section in the owners manual). If it is sticking it would cause the issue at hand. the other thing that might be a problem would be the blower motor speed controller but not as likely.

2004 Suzuki Forenza and recently I have heard a knocking sound

QUESTION:
I have a 2004 Suzuki Forenza and recently I have heard a knocking sound that increases as i accelerate, do I have a rod knock or could it hopefully be something else?

ANSWER:
What you have described is a classic description of a rod knocking. The engine is done. Its time to replace or rebuild it. If you choose to have it replaced, I recommend Jasper Engines as they come with a 3 yr/100,000 mile parts and LABOR nationwide warranty. This means if there is a problem you pay nothing. If you have a junk yard engine out in and there is a problem, you will have to pay the labor again.

How to check trouble codes on a 92 la sabre without the scanner

Checker and autozone type places will pull the codes for you for free most the time. Because they will sell you the part to fix it right there too.

If you want to do it yourself, no problem. Follow these steps : EXTRACT GM TROUBLE CODES

You will find step by step procedures for extracting the codes yourself along with code descriptions and causes for each code.

EXAMPLE:
CODE 24
Trouble Code 24 indicates that the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is reporting an abnormally low reading when other sensors indicate it should be higher.

The conditions for setting this code are:
1) no Code 33 or 34 (MAF Error) is present, and
2) the vehicle speed signal indicates < 4 MPH and
3) engine speed is between 1400 and 4400 RPM, and
4) during a low load condition (LV8 between 50 and 99), and
5) transmission not in Park or Neutral, and
6) all conditions met for more than 20 seconds

If the code was logged when the vehicle was in motion, the following should be checked:
1) Defective or corroded VSS connections
2) Maladjusted TPS sensor. The TPS should read about 0.42 volts at closed throttle
3) Defective speedometer cable
4) Bad or missing speedo drive gear(s) in tail shaft housing of the transmission
5) Defective VSS
6) Defective ECM

I noticed a vibrating sensation that runs through all of the car

QUESTION:
Dear Sir, I own a 2006 Trailblazer, it is only 46000 KM. Recently I noticed a vibrating sensation that runs through all of the car. It is most intense when cold and decreases after running the engine for a while, even when driving it is there but with lower intensity. I can feel it much clearer when I start the engine apply the brakes and shift the automatic transmission to "D" and try to take off while still applying the brakes. The vibration max is at 1200 RPM. Please advise

ANSWER:
This could be real easy or could end up being a real pain to find. GM has issued a couple of bulletins regarding this kind of a problem from different components in the chassis and drive line, etc. It makes a difference if the truck will do it on a hoist in the air or not. Some of the more typical things to look for would be bent, loose or missing or miss aligned exhaust components that are grounding out. If you can power brake the truck and make it do the vibration while someone else walks around it with a pry bar, you may find it. Have him apply pressure in different directions to things like the exhaust system. The rear transmission mounts, cross members, etc. Just about anything that can move or is mounted in a rubber bushing should be suspect. According to GM, you should even go so far as to check the drive line angle to be sure there is no harmonic resonance coming from the drive shaft. Some of the earlier ones had to have a vibration dampener added to them to stop the harmonic vibration from them. Even loose steel fuel or brake lines flexing against the floor board or frame could set off this kind of noise or vibration, as could an out of balance or lose fly wheel or flex plate on the rear of the motor, if it happened to be loose or had thrown a balance weight off of it. This gives you a few ideas, unfortunately, it can't just automatically be pinned down to any one component as there are so many possibilities. Including mounting brackets under the hood. But GM also has what is known as a chassis ear that can be attached to various parts of the frame and body and then have the car driven to help narrow down the area or cause based on the harmonics of the vibration, you may end up needing to use that kind of a tool to find the problem.

Pontiac Grand Am is running on only two cylinders

Question:
2001 Pontiac Grand Am is running on only two cylinders...the mechanic I use has tried to replace the coil but it didn't help...he doesn't have the equipment to diagnose...but I feel sure he could fix it if he knew where to go next... Already Tried: replacing the coil...I don't really know what else he did...but the coil didn't fix it...and I had it replaced about 2 years ago so I don't know that it was the problem to begin with...but my mechanic doesn't have the computer diagnostics to figure out where to go next...please give me all options and opinions as to what else the problem might be...it will save me trying to drive it 15 miles (which is might not make) to get to a place that has the computer diagnostics to figure it out...

Answer:
This system uses both cylinders for the spark in each. If the plug or wire for one set of plugs on a coil is bad, the other won't fire. Change to plugs and wires for the cylinders that are not firing as that is an inexpensive attempt. If that does not do it, the Ignition module is the problem. I strongly suspect the module myself.

My car is making a loud tapping noise when I start it

Question:
2004 Chevrolet Impala 3.4 : My car is making a loud tapping noise when I start it, but it fades as the car runs. I've been told I have bleeding lifters and there's nothing I can do out side of changing the lifters and it's no guarantee it won't happen again. What are my options can I buy something to add to my oil to stop this? Changed the oil every 20,000 miles.

ANSWER:
You can try an additive that is called "lifter quite". What it does is clean the passage ways so the oil can get through easier and it cleans what may be letting the lifters bleed down. This may be called something else where you live but if you ask your local auto parts store I'm sure they can get you something like this.

In the future I recommend changing your oil every 3,000 miles on all your vehicles. This will be the cheapest money you ever spend on your engine.

What does it mean when the TPMS light on my 2006 Pilot comes on?

QUESTON:
What does it mean when the TPMS light on my 2006 Honda Pilot comes on? I know this means that the system has been deactivated, but what are the possible causes and can I ignore this or is there a way to resolve this without having to spend too much money?

ANSWER:
The first thing you should do is check the air pressure in the tires. Does the words TPMS actually light up or is there a picture of a tire with an exclamation point lit?

If filling the tires up with air and driving the car over 30mph doesn't turn the light off than chances are there is a problem with one of the sensors. Usually they are the part of the system that commonly fails.

Continuing to drive with the light on will not harm anything. Its just a tire pressure monitoring system. Basically warning you when a tire is low and prevents rapid tire wear or running it flat.

How the Air Conditioner Works

Air conditioning system and the flow of refrigerant

Any automotive air conditioning system employs four basic parts-a mechanical compressor, driven by the vehicle's engine; an expansion valve, which is a restriction the compressor pumps against; and two heat exchangers, the evaporator and the condenser. In addition, there is the refrigerant that flows through this system.

The belt-driven compressor uses engine power to compress and circulate the refrigerant gas throughout the system. The refrigerant passes through the condenser on its way from the compressor outlet to the expansion valve. The condenser is located outside the passenger compartment, usually in front of the vehicle's radiator. The refrigerant passes from the expansion valve to the evaporator, and after passing through the evaporator tubing, it is returned to the compressor through its inlet. The evaporator is located inside the vehicle's passenger compartment.

When the compressor starts running, it .... READ MORE

what are possible reason for water getting in the engine

Some of the most common causes are a bad head gasket or depending on the vehicle it could be an intake gasket leaking. Some other causes could be a cracked head or a cracked block causing water to get into the engine. If it just a very little bit of water and you are not loosing coolant it could be just condensation. You should have the vehicle pressure tested and depending on the results from that you may need to do a compression test.

check engine light came on and a mechanic read the code and it came up P1400

QUESTION:
Recently my check engine light came on and a mechanic read the code and it came up P1400 which is the manifold differential pressure sensor circuit. I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant; does this need to be repaired by a Mitsubishi dealer or can I take it to any auto repair facility?

ANSWER:
P1400 is an MDP sensor. on turbo equipped engines a special sensor is used to measure manifold pressure (MDP=Manifold differential pressure)...or the difference between manifold pressure and barometric pressure. the engine controller has seen values outside of what is programmed normal and therefore set the code. manifold pressure sensing is critical to fuel management. if the sensor is remote mounted and has a hose going to it...check the hose for splits, holes, soft places that might collapse, kinks or anything else that might prevent the pressure signal from reaching the sensor. if it's not that simple...you may a have a failed sensor or engine controller. to sort that out you need to do some specific pinpoint testing using the trouble tree for that code plus a DVOM...at the very least.

Most auto mechanics would probably just change the sensor and send you on your way, after charging you a hefty fee for the part. If it were my car I'd check for vacuum leaks everywhere, including all devices that use vacuum (especially the ones going to the sensor). While it could be a bad sensor just the same, I have a suspicion that the code is giving you a symptom and the real problem might be a vacuum leak or valve cover gasket, etc.

How do I extract the check engine light codes?

QUESTION:

I have a 1995 Ford Mustang GT and my check engine light is on. How do I extract the codes? Do I need a scan tool or can I do it without one?

ANSWER:

You do not need a scan tool to extract the codes on this vehicle. This vehicle is OBD I and does not switch till 1996 so you do not need a scan tool. Basically you install a jumper wire or paper clip in the diagnostic test port located under the hood toward the passenger side firewall. Once the jumper is in place, you turn the key on (do not start engine) and the check engine light will flash the code. Here is a link to Complete Instructions and a full list of Ford OBD I Check Engine Light Codes with descriptions of each code: EXTRACT FORD CODES

HYBRID - To Buy or Not To Buy ?

2010 Honda Insight Concept

If you are in the market to buy a new car and have decided that a Hybrid is the way you want to go, you may just want to wait a bit longer. I have said this before and I will say it again. The Hybrids are still too new and have changed from year to year, so it is to soon to know what kind of problems your are going to have to deal with. The manufacturers have changed there designs almost every year since introduced to try and handle these issues. There is hope however for more reliability and a better price.

The 2010 Honda Insight, all new Hybrid. The Insight will be smaller than a Civic and CEO Takeo Fukui says it will be priced significantly below current hybrids. We expect it to start about $19,000, in keeping with the automaker’s goal of pricing it competitively against conventional small vehicles in its segment. “This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value,” Fukui says in a statement.

The Insight rides on an all-new platform as a bespoke hybrid, as opposed to offering a hybrid version of an existing vehicle as is the case with the current Honda Civic hybrid and the Honda Fit hybrid planned by 2015.

The on-sale date for the Insight is April 22—Earth Day—and the automaker is projecting global annual sales of 200,000, half of which are for the North American market.

My 78 Ford F100 will not start. I have replaced coil, battery, and the electronic unit that plugs into the wiring harness for the distributor. ( I'm not sure what you call it.) My truck will turn over great but it will not fire off. What else can I check? It was running great until I turned it off at the gas station and it would not crank again. Please Help!!

ANSWER:

Looking at all you have replaced I would suspect you have overlooked the dist stator. Under your dist cap is where you will find it. It was common back on the older F 100 when you replaced the Ignition module you also replaced the stator. The stator provides the signal to make the module fire the coil.

Bypass the GM Security no start issue

Many GM Vehicles have a little metal chip in the key. This means your car is equipped with GM's anti-theft device called VATS ( Vehicle Anti Theft System ).

How it Works: Inside the Ignition Key Cylinder are two very tiny wires that connect on either side of the chip when the key is inserted. This allows a signal from the engines computer to travel through the chip in the key and then start the vehicle.

The Problem: These two tiny wires tend to get bridle and break and the contact points that touch the key also become worn and no longer carry the signal.

Bypass procedure: What you need to do is use a multi-meter and measure the ohms of resistance of the chip from one side to the other. (thats right, the chip is just a resistor). Once you have the measurement, take yourself over to Radio Shack and buy one for around $1.29. Look below the column for this 2 tiny wires and expose them(you do not need to take the column apart) Install the resistor and you are good to go.

Silverado 350 vortec won't start when its cold.

1998 Chevy Silverado Truck Z71

QUESTION:

1998 Silverado 350 Vortec won't start when its cold.i hear the fuel pump running, and tried numerous times to start it, finally gave it one shot of starting fluid and it fired right up. Once it runs for a while and gets warm it will start right up. What could this be? Already Tried: fuel pump 6 months old, injectors one year old, fuel filter is new.

ANSWER:

Couple of things it could be. 1) Needs new spark plugs (extremely common)
2) IAC (Idle Air Control) is sticking and will need to be replaced. If you press gas pedal about 1/4 way down and it starts , then the IAC needs to be replaced.
3) Throttle body is dirty and is restricting air flow

Need some help on picking out a rice rocket?

2006 Suzuki Katana 600

QUESTION:
Need some help on picking out a rice rocket?
OK, so I've been riding a street legal dirt bike for about 5 years now, its a 200cc. I feel that I am ready to take a step up to a new bike that will go a bit faster than 50mph. (my bike only goes about 50 tops) and am interested in getting a 400cc rice rocket as I cannot see myself on a "cruiser" type bike. So I was wondering if someone has any suggestions on a good bike for me. Preferably one that I can be a bit more upright on and not so crouched down over the gas tank.. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, I just want it to get me from point A to point B.

ANSWER:
I recommend a Suzuki Katana. They allow you to set upright more than the others and are generally less expensive. Any Katana will go faster than 100mph. I would get a 600 though. It is a good idea to be afraid of the bike you ride, this keeps you in check. If you think you have mastered it, then you are looking for trouble....

I want to change Air Fuel ratio on my 1996 4.6L SFI SOHC engine, How??

Firestorm Spark Plug

Question:

I want to change Air Fuel ratio on my 1996 4.6L SFI SOHC engine, How?? I want to use a new spark plug (plazma) that is supposed to give me no emissions and i have to change the air fuel ratio from 14:7 to 30:1 for the plugs to work.

Answer:

I see a couple of ways. 1) you can install an aftermarket chip/module: computer chip or Module that has been re-calibrated to what you want. This can be done at a dyno shop also. 2) install a stand alone fuel management system that will allow you to change it anyway you want (expensive).

If these new plugs did what they say they can do you would think all the car companies that are struggling to sell cars would be jumping all over the idea.... but they are not???? I reality you do not need a new a new spark plug in order to change you fuel ratio. Changing your fuel ratio does get you better fuel mileage but at the cost of poor performance such as sluggish acceleration and less pulling power.

2004 Scion XB - air conditioner it does not cool down on the inside like it has

QUESTION:

I have a 2004 Scion XB, the problem that I just started experiencing in is that when I am running the air conditioner it does not cool down on the inside like it has in the past. This vehicle has been in an accident that had front end damage. could the accident have something do with the air conditioning not get as cold as it has in the past. Also the a/c unit has not been charged for 4 yrs or better yet since the scion was bought.

ANSWER:

More than likely it just needs to have the freon level topped off. Newer cars have tighter tolerances due to less freon being installed at the manufacturer. Have the freon topped off and all should be well once more. There is the possibility the condenser has been damaged and has a very slow leak.
