1996 land rover discovery SE7 gone wild

this morning my Land Rover self accelerated to the floor, the car would not stop with application of the brakes, had to take it out of gear to stop. At this point the engine ran to full charge spewing black smoke from the exhaust. Turned the engine off immediately. attempted to restart and nothing happened, pushed the car out of traffic and then it restarted and ran normal. When I put the gear in Drive, nothing happened, same in reverse, etc. the transmission is totally non responsive even as it appears that one thing has nothing to do with the other.

Just called the Land Rover parts and advice center in new England and they tell me that they are without a clue as to both events as they have never heard of a LR doing this.

any ideas as to what happened that made the car go crazy with acceleration, and what if any relation may this have with the transmission not engaging????

Response:

1) Stray radio interference. Someone experimenting with radio gear near by.

How do I remove the rear brake drums on a 1999 Dodge Ram Van 1500 ?

After removing the wheel and tire, remove the clip from one of the studs. Bang on the drum and try to pull it forward. If it won't move, remove the rubber plug from behind, and adjust your shoes inward, with a brake adj. tool, and then try pulling the drum off.

1997 Chevy Express 1500 350 ci TBI won't start

Our van won't start, just cranks. After changing the air filter I attempted to start it and had just a click. I charged the battery, still just a click. I thought maybe a pulley had frozen up so I sprayed with lubricant. I had a friend beat on the starter and solenoid and it turned over but would not start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Response:

If it cranks, check your fuel line to make sure gas is getting to the injectors, it sounds as possible fuel starvation.

Check your battery cables at the battery for corrosion. In fact just remove them and clean them real good. Remove negative cable first and when putting them back on, put the positive cable back on battery first!

If this doesn't help, check the cable at the starter to see if the connection is loose.

If that doesn't help, have the battery checked by load testing it, not with a hydrometer.

For it to run you need fuel, compression, and spark. If you have all 3 it should run. However, in cold weather if you dont know the age of your spark plugs, they will fail causing your engine to flood very easily. Even Fuel Injection systems as they spray a small amount of fuel before you crank. Another thing you can try on Cold Hard starts is to turn the key 3 or 4 time before cranking. You should hear the Fuel Pump running for a few seconds, turn the key off and repeat like I said 3 or 4 times. This acts like the old fashioned Choke.

If your not getting Spark, check you Engine Control Module they run $20 and up. Oh, it's under the distributor cap and also controls your Fuel Pump

1996 Saturn-Starting Problem

I have a 1996 Saturn SL1 and suddenly it won't start. It is low on gas so, my first thought was that with the severe cold yesterday had caused gasline freeze. The odd thing though, is that it isn't turning over. I put some gas line antifreeze in it and let it sit. It hasn't started yet but, I haven't tried it yet today. It has a new battery etc. Everything works. he radio, the blower, the lights all have plenty of power so, any ideas as to why it isn't attempting to turn over?

Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

Response:

http://www.freeautomechanic.com/nostart.html it seems to be an electrical problem. Before you do anything else make sure the blinkers work at normal pace, sometimes lights and all other electrical equipment work with a low battery, not the blinkers. Also, if the battery is not delivering sufficient power to crank the engine you should hear a ‘clicking’ noise, which is a sure sign of insufficient crank power and the battery needs to be charged and the posts cleaned and make sure they are tight.

Often, when the battery is new and fully charged the battery posts are no tight enough, or have enough corrosion –which is not always visible- to prevent from sending sufficient power to the starter. If this is the case, simply cleaning and retightening of the posts is enough to solve the problem.

If you have plenty of power and none of the above symptoms are present, the most likely alternative is a possible loose connection in the starter system.

1997 Lincoln Town Car rear suspension

just got an almost mint condition 97 Town Car, the rear suspension is almost sitting on the ground and there is a warning light that says "check compressor". There is nothing in the owners manual that talks about this light, if it is the compressor, the shocks or the on/off switch. i have played with the switch with no response and various friends tell me it is just a matter of changing the shocks, the mechanic nearby rapidly said $600. would love some guidance to avoid wasting time and money before I go pick up the car which is two hours away from home

Response:

These came out as an after market accessory about 40 or more years ago. I installed two on friends cars. If you have a volt-ohm meter, you should be able to ring out everything in that circuit. Starting with the fuse, the switch, and the compressor. The ones I installed had 1/8 or 1/4 inch plastic lines from the pump to the rear axle where they teed off towards eack shock. There was also a switch to deflate the system, if memory serves.

Contact the dealer for the locations of these items. I've done a ton of plumbing during the last 40 years, and do not like plastic lines on anything. Could be just an open line.

9 out of 10 times it's the switch that connects to the rear axle. In particular it's the pivot connection (like a hinge). However, running this system without air WILL cause the air shocks to become defective. I have had a couple compressors burn out also due to the leveling switch on the rear axle. On Lincolns the pressure relief valve is on the compressor. It also controls the light on your dashboard. There is also a switch on the older compressors to turn them off. You can substitute the compressor with Cadillac Air Ride they are almost identical and found at most salvage yards.

The reason that you should turn it off before jacking is so that you do not over pressurize the air chamber when lifted so that the rear of the car is jacked up once you let it off the jacks. Some of these have air shocks while others have air bags inside of the coil springs. Those with the bags are made by Air Inds of Lansing on Terminal Rd. They have the air supplied to them via a 1/8 inch plastic air line and if you must repair that line you cannot use a standard union. It must be for plastic or vinyl line as big trucks use. Use of anything other and your asking for more headaches. Like Ben, I've been there and done that too.

it may act up where it will just not start

We have a problem with our 1995 Oldsmobile Silhouette. And the problem we are having with it is one day it will run good, and the another day it may act up where it will just not start or you can be going down the road and it will stop running. can not figure it out. Like the other night we were coming back from getting arrons( sp?)done and we were at the stop light and it stops on us and we pushed it out of the road. let it sit a good 45 min. then it started up and we went another maybe a block and it stopped again. We had to have it towed home. It then sat here at home for a good 2-3 hr. and my son went to get his dad and it started up and (knock on wood) hasn't acted up so far sents friday night. What could we do for it?

Response:

My first suggestion is to check the fuel filter if the car cranks but will not start, or it just stops running. If the filter is not completely clogged yet and some debris are floating and settle, etc. this is a possibility. Another is a cracked coil cover or coil wire which tend to act up in wet weather.

Fuse box connectors, or any connector likely has a bad connection. The

connector will be discolored and the insulation will show signs of

overheating. IOW look at the wire side of the connector/fuse box.

Has anyone put snow tires on a minivan?

We're considering snow tires for my Honda Odyssey, but wondering if it's worth it. The minivan just seems to need more grip even though we have all-weather tires on there now. Depending on any bells and whistles we get it will cost from $650 to $1,100 with installation - yikes! We've been told it's best to get wheels *and* tires, since it makes changing them not as expensive each time it's done.

I understand you can get two, maybe three, years out of them, but I haven't had this verified. And when you're not using them is it okay to store them in the garage? Or will they deteriorate there with the heat of summer?

Please chime in if you have experience with snow tires (cost, durability, handling, tire brand, etc), especially if you have an Odyssey.

Response:

What part of the country do you live in? How much snow do you get in an average winter? Is your car front or rear wheel drive? I'm near Detroit and the last time I had snow tires was 1961, and will never use them again. Tires will age, and most mfrs will advise between 6-10 years. The are starting to put expiration date. on the now instead of the date they were made.

I haven't heard much about putting snow tires on the front of minivans but it would give you more traction in the snow and mud. But it may affect the handling and stopping of the van. Buying new rims for the tires is the way to go. That would save the cost of remounting them each year. Seems like a regular set of snow tires should work without having to special order some.

auto dealer said that they would fix anything wrong with it.

I just bought a 2002 Saturn L300 in July and the auto dealer said that they would fix anything wrong with it. My Problem is that when I am getting onto the highway it don't want to shift into 2nd gear. I cant check the trans fluid so I am not sure if it's low or that it may be in the trans it's self. I am supposed to take my car back Thursday and I would like someone else opinion and not just the repair shops opinion saying I drive my car like a race car. The place I bought it from in Lansing (RPM) said that they would fix what ever is wrong but when I took my car back to them they are giving me the runaround and I took the mechanic for a ride to show him what it was doing I took my car onto the highway when It gets to 2nd gear it just starts winding out till I let off the gas. The Mechanic says I drove it like a race car. I have had a few cars and worked on most of them and I have never had a car do this so I knew it was something wrong. It has a sealed trans and no dipstick and I don't have a hoist to lift it up. You have to lift it up on a hoist to check it.

Response 1) If this is an automatic transmission, it could be as simple as a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) or a failed shift solenoid. Neither are too expensive part wise so I wouldn't think the dealer would give you much guff over it. Besides, a deal is a deal and they said thy would fix it....... no worries.

Response 2) 1. Why can't you check the trans fluid?

2. Perhaps your Prndl is off

I drive an old Dodge Dakota and the prndl is off by one step. Drive is in neutral, 2 is drive etc. The little floss sized string has stretched over the years.

Windshield fogging inside on a 1996 Dodge Caravan

My daughter has a 1996 Dodge Caravan. When it is cold out and she turns the heater or defroster on the windshield fogs up on the inside. I told her I think it's is caused by a leak in the heater core. Anyone else with any other ideas? Thanks

Response:

This depends on IF the van has an operational Air Conditioning System. This "Fog" is caused from Air Density changes. When you first start it up and turn on the Defroster(hence the name) it also turns on the A/C Compressor. Pop the hood and watch the compressor clutch. Especially these past few days. But this SHOULD evaporate within a couple minutes unlike Anti-Freeze.

1996 Jeep Cherokee won't start

My Jeep has a new battery and starter. The fusible link and alternator are also good but the damn thing will not start. All fuses and relays are good too. When I turn the key I get nothing, no sounds what so ever. Anyone have an idea of what it could be? we can however start the car by "shorting out" the starter from underneath the car but that is the only way we can get it to start.

http://www.freeautomechanic.com/nostart.html

Response:

Ignition switch

Neutral / park switch if the unit has automatic trans.

OR

Clutch depressed switch if manual transmission.

simple test. Run a wire from the positive battery post to the alternator output *that red wire on the back of the alternator). Try starting the Jeep. If it starts you've blown a fuse link. If not you've got other problems. With the Key on in the Run position does ANYTHING work?? Radio, Gauges???

Just because an item has been Replaced does not ensure that it is NOT Defective. No Power to any electrical with the Key on is a Prime example of a Wiring problem. Usually a Fusible Link on the Starter. Fusible Links look like a wire and may look fine to the eye however, like a fuse be burnt under the protective coat. This is why I asked if you have power with the key on to your accesories. If NO power simply run a wire to the Alt from the Pos on the battery and leave the key and radio on. If the radio starts as soon as the battery is connected then you have a Blown Fuse Link. Skipping steps lead you astray.

If you have power to the accesories then is it an Automatic Trans or Stick? If it's a stick check tyhe clutch Depression Switch on the top of the Clutch Pedal. Hint it's that plastic thing that has 2 wires and moves with the Clutch Pedal. If it Automatic, wiggle the shifter in Neutral while holding the key on the start position. This checks the Neutral Safty Switch.

Some Ways to Improve Fuel Efficiency

The world is now clamored by the great problem in fuel. With oil prices increasing on a regular basis, the problem in fuel has become a great global concern. This has left many car owners in such a sullen mood; most especially those who own muscle cars and sports cars whose engines are so powerful that they devour a tank-full of gas in an instant. This has caused tremendous effects on people, and because of this, a new trend has arisen.

More and more people are now in search for fuel efficient cars. While in the past, car enthusiasts pride on how fast their cars can go and how huge their engines are, nowadays, better mileage and fuel efficiency has become everyone’s priority. Saving fuel is a difficult feat. But since transport is a necessity, how can you save fuel while still enjoying the car? What things can you do to be able to make sure that your car burn fuel very efficiently?

* Its good policy to know how fuel efficient your car is so keep tabs on how much fuel you put in your car each time you fill up at the pump and compare that to the mileage you are getting. This way, if there is a drop in previous fuel efficiency you can then consult your mechanic and tackle the issue early on.

You can also consider putting additives into your gas tank. There are several brands of additives now available in the market and some of them claim to successfully increase a car’s fuel efficiency up to ten and twenty percent. These additives are non toxic and non-fossil based and will give your car a longer driving potential, since it will make your car more fuel efficient.

I have a noise in the front end of my '03 Dodge Caravan

Started with a thud on right front if even hit a small bump in the road, and continually got worse. Now there is a rattle to accompany the thud, sounds like dice in a wooden box rattling around. Tires wear bad. Have had it in three times, mechanics cannot find anything to blame it on to fix. Very irritating noises especially when traveling down the highway. Starts feeling like it is thuding on my last nerve. Approx 72K on speedometer. Any ideas that I can send the mechanics on the right road to fix.

How do i get to the spark plugs on my 1996 Buick Century 3.1 Engine

How do I roll the engine forward to acess the back spark plugs? It has one brace on front, I took it off and tried to roll the moter with a pry bar. Didnt budge. Do i need to jack the car? Something else I need to remove? Would appregiate any ideas. Thanks

Response:

The easy way is to start the car and SLOWLY move. Have a second person use a heavy duty muffler clamp u bolt through where the dog bone connects. Then shut off the engine the backside is raised so you can axcess the 3 spark plugs.

Response:

There is a special tool you can borrow for free from autozone that connect where the dog bone is and you put car in neutral ans just tighten up the center bolt pulling the engine forward in a safe manner.

Online Car Repair & Maintenance

Just how important is car repair and Maintenance? Do we really need to spend money on our cars? Can't we just put gas in it and drive it forever? The answer to these questions can best be answered with another question. How long do you want to be able to drive your car?

Without proper maintenance your cars life may be short lived. Sure, if you are just going to trade it back in at the end of your 36,000 mile warranty you can just put gas in it and drive it. But with today's economy there isn't to many people buying new cars. So I guess we are going to need to be able to rely on that car for a good while yet and that's where proper car repairs and maintenance can help insure reliability for a long time.

The basics are simple: change the oil regularly, rotate your tires, check your fluids and filters. How often should you do this? Mary says her dad told her that he heard from a friend that you only need to change your oil every 7,000 miles. Well, Lets refer to the above question, How long do you want to be able to drive your car? You can change the oil every 7,000 miles but the engine probably won't last much longer than 120,000 miles before the sludge costs you an engine ($5000.00). You should change your oil every 3,000 miles to insure proper engine lubrication and not worry about the engine for up to 500,000 miles. But, Mary said he owners manual said she could wait longer....  That may be true, but lets think for a minute. The owners manual comes from the manufacturer who is only going to warranty the engine for a short period of time. After that your on your own and the manufacturer only makes money if you have to buy another car..... I think you get the idea. When you have your oil change is perfect time to rotate the tires and check your fluids. Car Maintenance can and will save you money in the long run and help your car deliver many years of reliable driving.

2001 Chrysler Intrepid battery light on

I went to a mechanic a month ago and replace the alternator because my battery light came on.  After about one month, the battery light came on again.  I went to the same mechanic and he said that the oxygen senor is faulty.  If I unplugged one oxygen sensor and I did not fix that one oxygen sensor. Will the car still run and won’t shut down?  What are the problems that the car might cause?

Response:

the battery light coming on has nothing to do with an oxygen sensor. I would suggest going to a different shop and having it retested.

An Oxygen sensor has nothing to do with the battery light. If you unplug an oxygen sensor it will still run but have bad gas mileage and the check engine light will come on.

I have a `99 Chevy S-10 4.3X with a P0300 code

I have a `99 Chevy S-10 4.3X with a P0300 code. Multiple cylinder misfire. Also a P0171 and P0174 - system too lean banks 1 and 2. I`ve tried to fix the misfire problem with no luck. New plugs, wires, Distributor cap and rotor, coil and control module. Engine does miss but is drivable. The other two codes I have no idea what to look for. What can I do to fix these problems.

A P0300 OBD DTC code indicates a random or multiple misfire.

Hybrid Electric Car Models

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) use two or more energy conversion technologies. This is usually a combination of a conventional engine with extra batteries driving electric motors.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) use “two or more energy conversion technologies.” Often, this means coupling an internal combustion engine (ICE) with a secondary source of stored electrical power such as batteries. The different power sources are then used separately or in tandem to deliver an optimum combination of power and fuel economy. The objective that has led to the development of hybrid vehicles involves delivering every greater fuel economies as the amount of allowable harmful emissions trends towards zero.

There are a number of different types of hybrid vehicle that have been released onto the market. Here is a sample of some of those HEV types. Not all of these models will have been made available outside of the United States, and those that have been released may be known by a different name in other regions.

Hybrid system components

A permanent magnet brushless motor/generator is mounted adjacent to the engine. A smaller motor/generator replaces the engine flywheel. The motor control unit controls the delivery of electric current to and from the battery and the electric motors.

The internal combustion engine in a hybrid vehicle is designed to operate only within its most efficient operating range, typically between 2000 and 4500 rpm. Its construction has lighter internal components than would otherwise be required, resulting in an efficient engine with low friction qualities. It may also incorporate other fuel efficient technologies such as shutting down selected engine cylinders, multi runner intake manifolds, and throttleless intake manifolds. Read more

What should you expect when driving a Hybrid Car

When the vehicle is moving off from a stationary position, and when travelling at low to moderate speeds, the main electric motor/generator drives the vehicle. At these speeds the internal combustion engine operation is less efficient and is normally used only to charge the battery.

During normal driving, the combustion engine starts and drives the generator & the power divider. Power from the generator is used to drive the electric motor. The motor control unit controls the power divider so the drive remains at its most efficient.

When accelerating, as well as using power from the combustion engine, the control unit draws power from the battery and directs it to the electric motor/generator, providing more power to the wheels than the combustion engine could supply on its own.

During deceleration and braking the combustion engine is <  Read More >

battery went dead I jumped battery, now only the alarm comes on when turning the ignition

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer and the battery went dead. I jumped battery, now only the alarm comes on when turning the ignition. alarm goes off, but engine won't even turn.

Answer:

Buy a new battery or charge the one you have. Remove old battery or disconnect the one you have. Turn ignition key to the "on" position and leave it there while you connect the new battery or charged battery. Start car.

With the key being on when you connect the battery the computer knows its OK to start.

ABS Light is on and I don't want to spend anymore money to fix it

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with the ABS Light on. The codes say both speed sensors are bad in the front. I replaced both spend sensors and the light is still. The shop wants more money to look at it and I don't want to put anymore money into it. Is there a way to just unplug the bulbs so that I don't have to see the light?

Answer:

Yes and No. This truck does not have bulbs, it is equipped with LED lights. But you can take the dash apart and remove the circuit board from the gauge cluster and clip one leg of the LED and it will no longer light up. I do not recommend clipping both legs in case you want to reconnect it later.

1994 Chevy S-10 Died while driving and won't start

I have a 1994 Chevy S-10 2.2L Engine. Drove fine to work and on the way home out of nowhere the engine died and won't start. I hit the key and it turns over but now it sounds different and will not start. It has spark and i tried starter fluid and still won't start. What could it be?

Answer:

The 2.2L engine has a common problem with failing timing chain tensioners that break and cause the timing chain to jump at at once. this throws off the valve timing and causes no compression. In most cases you can just install a new timing chain and tensioner and problem solved. In some cases not only does the chain and tensioner need to be replaced but the valves can sometimes get bent, usually the exhaust valves. So after you replace the timing chain and tensioner perform a compression test, if no compression is found, you can be sure the next step is removing the head to see how many valves need to be replaced. Don't forget to replace the head bolts at the same time as they are one time use only bolts.

dtc code p0171 vehicle idles very rough - IDLE FAST AFTER IT WARMS UP CODE PO171

Code PO171 : System too lean (bank 1)

Description : The adaptive fuel Strategy continuously monitors fuel delivery hardware. The test fails when the adaptive fuel tables reach a rich calibrated limit.

You may have a vacuum leak, stuck IAC Valve or dirty MAF. You may find that if you remove the internal Sensor from the MAF Case that some debree has collected on the thin wire. If you find debree, use a Q-Tip to clean it. DO NOT USE CHEMICALS TO CLEAN IT. If no debree is found, try a Known Good MAF Sensor. Still no fix, move on to testing for a vacuum leak. ( listen for a whistle noise or spray some starting fluid around the intake area while the engine is running). The IAC Valve (Idle air control) may be stuck , remove it and clean the carbon and reinstall if no vacuum leaks are found. Feel free to check out some of the other resources on the website as there may be some helpful information available.

I have a I was driving it more home after tires noticed it running rough

Heres my problem recently did an alternator on my 03 MPV over 100k miles.

What a bear also replace ball joint. After I got it all back together I took it for new front tires. It had been sitting in my garage for a year before I got around to repairing it.

As I was driving it more home after tires noticed it running rough I filled up tank as it was low on gas. Also put fuel injection cleaner in full tank & some gas line anti freeze in case of moisture in tank while sitting.

As I was returning home it got louder & I barely made it up my hill no power.

When i pulled in driveway it was gettting darker I could see the flex pipe was red hot what was left of it also could see flames shooting out like raw gas.

No check engine light is on brought to shop to put on scanner & they got no codes either.

Answer:

Sound like you have a plugged exhaust you said flex pipe . Is cat converter still on it? DO a simple test loosen exhaust before cat if their. If not loosen at first flange after manifold. Just loosen dont remove. Loosen enough to have a gap between pipes the test drive

1996 Ford Crown Victoria - vehicle starts jumping like its hung in high gear

When I start to slow down, the vehicle starts jumping like its hung in high gear and I have to press the o/d off button on my gear shift to stop it. Also, while driving down the road, when I let up on the accelerator the transmission starts jumping.

Answer:

One of the solenoids or valves in the transmission's valve body is hanging up . Look at the fluid color ( wipe stick off on white paper) if it is brown instead of bright pink, you can try a filter and fluid service ( make sure to use Mercon V this is full synthetic fluid required in this vehicle) . If the fluid is pretty pink you can try putting an additive called " Shudder Fix " ( can be found at auto parts store ) this may be a good thing to try before tearing apart the transmission. You may want to check the VSS ( vehicle speed sensor to make sure it is sending the proper signals ) also before tearing it apart.Feel free to check out some of the other resources on the website as there may be some helpful information available.

Honda Pilot. The "D" light just started blinking this morning

Have a 2003 Honda Pilot. The "D" light just started blinking this morning. Is it safe to drive? What problem does a blinking "D" light indicate?

Answer:

When the D light is blinking, an error in the transmission sensor or control system has been detected. It can ramge from a loose sensor wire to a failing trans.

You would need to retrieve the trouble code to understand what is causing the problem. Autozone provides free scanning services. Get the exact trouble code and we can proceed with diagnostics.

If there is no abnormal noise or gear shifting irregularities, it is safe to drive the vehicle. If light goes off after restarting and would only come on later, it would normally be caused by a malfunctining sensor. If the speedometer is not working, it can cause the light to illuminate.

1992 Mercury Cougar is running rough and has a bad miss

we have a bad miss. new plugs, cap, rotor and tested plug wires seems to be all the same

Answer:

Well the first thing we need to do is determine what cylinder is causing the issue. With the engine running, ( EXTREME CAUTION : You will get shocked if you do not use protective gloves 15,000 volts )  remove one plug wire at a time and see which one you remove and the engine sound doesn't change. You have now narrowed the issue to one cylinder. check compression with a compression tester. Check for spark, check plug wires to make sure it isn't sparking through the boot. check for injector pulse. repair as needed.   If no one individual cylinder shows a difference , perform a compression test on all cylinders all should be with in 20 psi of each other.  If it fails , you have a blown head gasket. If they all pass the test then you may have a clogged EGR Valve or Clogged catalytic convertor.   Test each part and replace as needed.  Feel free to check out some of the other resources on the website as there may be some helpful information available.

2005 Nissan Altima Crankshaft Sensor Learn Procedure

CKP System Variation Learn Procedure

The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure while monitoring the following components:

CKP sensors activity-If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that was set

Camshaft position (CMP) sensor activity-If there is a CMP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that was set

Engine coolant temperature (ECT)-If the ECT is not warm enough, idle the engine until the ECT reaches normal operating temperature

NOTE: For additional diagnostic information, refer to DTC P1336.

Install a scan tool

Monitor the powertrain control module for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If other DTCs are set, except DTC P1336, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code List for the applicable DTC that was set

Select the crankshaft position (CKP) variation learn procedure

Observe the fuel cut-off

The scan tool instructs you to perform the following:

Block the drive wheels

Apply the vehicles parking brake

Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON

Maintain pressure on the brake pedal

Start and idle the engine

Place the vehicles transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).

With the scan tool, enable the CKP system variation learn procedure.

Slowly increase the engine speed to the RPM that you observed.

NOTE: While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

Immediately release the throttle when fuel cut-off is reached

The scan tool should display the Learn Status: "Learned this ignition"

If the scan tool does not display this message and no additional DTCs set, refer to Symptoms - Engine

If a DTC set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set

Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully

codes from scanner indicate the emissions system (440,441,443) Does that mean I should replace the purge valve/ soleniod

I have a 2003 Toyota Echo, codes from scanner indicate the emissions system (440,441,443) Does that mean I should replace the purge valve/ soleniod? Is that hard to get to?

Answer:

P0 443 : Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction ..... this indicates a malfunction in the curcuit. It may be a faulty part, you may have gotten some bad gas, without testing the part there is no way to know that it needs replaced. You may have a vacuum leak. This is an emissions only related issue and in no way will it affect the drive-ability of the vehicle. It is an EPA mandated part of the vehicle. That being said, I would suggest having the light turned off or cleared( has to be done with a scan tool and will not go out on its own, even if you fix the problem) drive it around, buy some good gas instead of the cheap stuff and see if the light comes back on. If it does and it annoys you enough , take it to your local dealer and have them repair it. The test equipment is expensive and most small shops do not have it. You can try changing parts if you want , but this is usually not a good practice to replace parts if they have not been tested as a bad part. It can also get quite costly . And yes it is difficult to get to.

Electric Fuel Pump Testing - 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

Connect pressure gauge J–34730–1, or equivalent, to fuel pressure test point on the fuel rail. Wrap a rag around the pressure tap to absorb any leakage that may occur when installing the gauge.

Turn the ignition ON and check that pump pressure is 24–40 psi. (165–276 kPa)

Start the engine and allow it to idle. The fuel pressure should drop to 28–32 psi (193–221 kPa) due to the lower manifold pressure.

NOTE: The idle pressure will vary somewhat depending on barometric pressure. Check for a drop in pressure indicating regulator control, rather than specific values.

If the fuel pressure drops, check the operation of the check valve, the pump coupling connection, fuel pressure regulator valve and the injectors. A restricted fuel line or filter may also cause a pressure drip. To check the fuel pump output, restrict the fuel return line and run 12 volts to the pump. The fuel pressure should rise to approximately 75 psi (517 kPa) with the return line restricted.

Before attempting to remove or service any fuel system component, it is necessary to relieve the fuel system pressure.

P0340 and P0353 are currently present codes were cleared and came back do you think its a wiring problem or both components are defective

I have a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager. P0340 and P0353 are currently present codes were cleared and came back do you think its a wiring problem or both components are defective

Answer:

P0340 : Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

P0353 : Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

Looks to me like one of the coils needs to be replaced and would probably take care of the other issue. I would replace the coil/plug/wire ( which ever one you need) and then clear codes and test it again. You can swap around parts from one cylinder to the other to test them.
